Old Testament

Leviticus 25

25:1Yahweh spoke to Moses in Mount Sinai, saying, 25:2Speak to the children of Israel, and tell them, When you come into the land which I give you, then shall the land keep a Sabbath to Yahweh. 25:3Six years you shall sow your field, and six years you shall prune your vineyard, and gather in the fruits of it; 25:4but in the seventh year shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to Yahweh: you shall neither sow your field, nor prune your vineyard. 25:5That which grows of itself of your harvest you shall not reap, and the grapes of your undressed vine you shall not gather: it shall be a year of solemn rest for the land. 25:6The Sabbath of the land shall be for food for you; for you, and for your servant and for your maid, and for your hired servant and for your stranger, who sojourn with you. 25:7For your cattle, and for the animals that are in your land, shall all the increase of it be for food. 25:8You shall number seven Sabbaths of years to you, seven times seven years; and there shall be to you the days of seven Sabbaths of years, even forty-nine years. 25:9Then shall you send abroad the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month; in the day of atonement shall you send abroad the trumpet throughout all your land. 25:10You shall make the fiftieth year holy, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all the inhabitants of it: it shall be a jubilee to you; and you shall return every man to his possession, and you shall return every man to his family. 25:11A jubilee shall that fiftieth year be to you: you shall not sow, neither reap that which grows of itself in it, nor gather the grapes in it of the undressed vines. 25:12For it is a jubilee; it shall be holy to you: you shall eat the increase of it out of the field. 25:13In this year of jubilee you shall return every man to his possession. 25:14If you sell anything to your neighbor, or buy of your neighbor's hand, you shall not wrong one another. 25:15According to the number of years after the jubilee you shall buy of your neighbor, and according to the number of years of the crops he shall sell to you. 25:16According to the length of the years you shall increase the price of it, and according to the shortness of the years you shall diminish the price of it; for the number of the crops does he sell to you. 25:17You shall not wrong one another; but you shall fear your God: for I am Yahweh your God. 25:18Therefore you shall do my statutes, and keep my ordinances and do them; and you shall dwell in the land in safety. 25:19The land shall yield its fruit, and you shall eat your fill, and dwell therein in safety. 25:20If you shall say, What shall we eat the seventh year? Behold, we shall not sow, nor gather in our increase; 25:21then I will command my blessing on you in the sixth year, and it shall bring forth fruit for the three years. 25:22You shall sow the eighth year, and eat of the fruits, the old store; until the ninth year, until its fruits come in, you shall eat the old store. 25:23The land shall not be sold in perpetuity; for the land is mine: for you are strangers and sojourners with me. 25:24In all the land of your possession you shall grant a redemption for the land. 25:25If your brother be grew poor, and sell some of his possession, then shall his kinsman who is next to him come, and shall redeem that which his brother has sold. 25:26If a man have no one to redeem it, and he be grew rich and find sufficient to redeem it; 25:27then let him reckon the years of the sale of it, and restore the surplus to the man to whom he sold it; and he shall return to his possession. 25:28But if he isn't able to get it back for himself, then that which he has sold shall remain in the hand of him who has bought it until the year of jubilee: and in the jubilee it shall go out, and he shall return to his possession. 25:29If a man sell a dwelling-house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; for a full year shall he have the right of redemption. 25:30If it isn't redeemed within the space of a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall be made sure in perpetuity to him who bought it, throughout his generations: it shall not go out in the jubilee. 25:31But the houses of the villages which have no wall round about them shall be reckoned with the fields of the country: they may be redeemed, and they shall go out in the jubilee. 25:32Nevertheless the cities of the Levites, the houses of the cities of their possession, may the Levites redeem at any time. 25:33If one of the Levites redeem, then the house that was sold, and the city of his possession, shall go out in the jubilee; for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel. 25:34But the field of the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is their perpetual possession. 25:35If your brother has grown poor, and his hand fail with you; then you shall uphold him: as a stranger and a sojourner shall he live with you. 25:36Take no interest of him or increase, but fear your God; that your brother may live with you. 25:37You shall not give him your money on interest, nor give him your victuals for increase. 25:38I am Yahweh your God, who brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God. 25:39If your brother has grown poor with you, and sell himself to you; you shall not make him to serve as a bond-servant. 25:40As a hired servant, and as a sojourner, he shall be with you; he shall serve with you to the year of jubilee: 25:41then shall he go out from you, he and his children with him, and shall return to his own family, and to the possession of his fathers shall he return. 25:42For they are my servants, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: they shall not be sold as bondservants. 25:43You shall not rule over him with rigor, but shall fear your God. 25:44As for your bondservants, and your bondmaids, whom you shall have; of the nations that are round about you, of them shall you buy bondservants and bondmaids. 25:45Moreover of the children of the strangers who sojourn among you, of them shall you buy, and of their families who are with you, which they have conceived in your land: and they shall be your possession. 25:46You shall make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold for a possession; of them shall you take your bondservants forever: but over your brothers the children of Israel you shall not rule, one over another, with rigor. 25:47If a stranger or sojourner with you has grown rich, and your brother has grown poor beside him, and sell himself to the stranger or sojourner with you, or to the stock of the stranger's family; 25:48after that he is sold he may be redeemed: one of his brothers may redeem him; 25:49or his uncle, or his uncle's son, may redeem him, or any who is a close relative to him of his family may redeem him; or if he has grown rich, he may redeem himself. 25:50He shall reckon with him who bought him from the year that he sold himself to him to the year of jubilee: and the price of his sale shall be according to the number of years; according to the time of a hired servant shall he be with him. 25:51If there be yet many years, according to them he shall give back the price of his redemption out of the money that he was bought for. 25:52If there remain but few years to the year of jubilee, then he shall reckon with him; according to his years shall he give back the price of his redemption. 25:53As a servant hired year by year shall he be with him: he shall not rule with rigor over him in your sight. 25:54If he isn't redeemed by these means, then he shall go out in the year of jubilee, he, and his children with him. 25:55For to me the children of Israel are servants; they are my servants whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt: I am Yahweh your God.

New Testament

Luke 22

22:1Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, drew near. 22:2The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people. 22:3Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered with the twelve. 22:4He went away, and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them. 22:5They were glad, and agreed to give him money. 22:6He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude. 22:7The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover must be sacrificed. 22:8He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat."

22:9They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare?"

22:10He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters. 22:11Tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"' 22:12He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there."

22:13They went, found things as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover. 22:14When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles. 22:15He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, 22:16for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God." 22:17He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, "Take this, and share it among yourselves, 22:18for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until the Kingdom of God comes."

22:19He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me." 22:20Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you. 22:21But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table. 22:22The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!"

22:23They began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing. 22:24There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest. 22:25He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called 'benefactors.' 22:26But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves. 22:27For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn't it he who sits at the table? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves. 22:28But you are those who have continued with me in my trials. 22:29I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me, 22:30that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

22:31The Lord said, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat, 22:32but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers."

22:33He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"

22:34He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times."

22:35He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, and wallet, and shoes, did you lack anything?"

They said, "Nothing."

22:36Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword. 22:37For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'He was counted with the lawless.' For that which concerns me has an end."

22:38They said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords."

He said to them, "That is enough."

22:39He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him. 22:40When he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you don't enter into temptation."

22:41He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed, 22:42saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."

22:43An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. 22:44Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.

22:45When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of grief, 22:46and said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."

22:47While he was still speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him. 22:48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"

22:49When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?" 22:50A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

22:51But Jesus answered, "Let me at least do this" -- and he touched his ear, and healed him. 22:52Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 22:53When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn't stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."

22:54They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed from a distance. 22:55When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them. 22:56A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him."

22:57He denied Jesus, saying, "Woman, I don't know him."

22:58After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them!"

But Peter answered, "Man, I am not!"

22:59After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!"

22:60But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 22:61The Lord turned, and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times." 22:62He went out, and wept bitterly.

22:63The men who held Jesus mocked him and beat him. 22:64Having blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?" 22:65They spoke many other things against him, insulting him.

22:66As soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people was gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying, 22:67"If you are the Christ, tell us."

But he said to them, "If I tell you, you won't believe, 22:68and if I ask, you will in no way answer me or let me go. 22:69From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."

22:70They all said, "Are you then the Son of God?"

He said to them, "You say it, because I AM."

22:71They said, "Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth!"
