Old Testament

Genesis 39-40

39:1Joseph was brought down to Egypt. Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the captain of the guard, an Egyptian, bought him from the hand of the Ishmaelites that had brought him down there. 39:2Yahweh was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man. He was in the house of his master the Egyptian. 39:3His master saw that Yahweh was with him, and that Yahweh made all that he did prosper in his hand. 39:4Joseph found favor in his sight. He ministered to him, and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand. 39:5It happened from the time that he made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that Yahweh blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of Yahweh was on all that he had, in the house and in the field. 39:6He left all that he had in Joseph's hand. He didn't concern himself with anything, except for the food which he ate.

Joseph was well-built and handsome. 39:7It happened after these things, that his master's wife cast her eyes on Joseph; and she said, "Lie with me."

39:8But he refused, and said to his master's wife, "Behold, my master doesn't know what is with me in the house, and he has put all that he has into my hand. 39:9He isn't greater in this house than I, neither has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?"

39:10It happened that as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he didn't listen to her, to lie by her, or to be with her. 39:11It happened about this time, that he went into the house to do his work, and there were none of the men of the house inside. 39:12She caught him by his garment, saying, "Lie with me!"

He left his garment in her hand, and ran outside. 39:13It happened, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and had run outside, 39:14that she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, "Behold, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice. 39:15It happened, when he heard that I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and ran outside." 39:16She laid up his garment by her, until his master came home. 39:17She spoke to him according to these words, saying, "The Hebrew servant, whom you have brought to us, came in to me to mock me, 39:18and it happened, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his garment by me, and ran outside."

39:19It happened, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, "This is what your servant did to me," that his wrath was kindled. 39:20Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners were bound, and he was there in the custody. 39:21But Yahweh was with Joseph, and showed kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. 39:22The keeper of the prison committed to Joseph's hand all the prisoners who were in the prison. Whatever they did there, he was the doer of it. 39:23The keeper of the prison didn't look after anything that was under his hand, because Yahweh was with him; and that which he did, Yahweh made it prosper.

40:1It happened after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord, the king of Egypt. 40:2Pharaoh was angry against his two officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers. 40:3He put them in custody in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound. 40:4The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, and he took care of them. They stayed in prison many days. 40:5They both dreamed a dream, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison. 40:6Joseph came in to them in the morning, and saw them, and, saw that they were sad. 40:7He asked Pharaoh's officers who were with him in custody in his master's house, saying, "Why do you look so sad today?"

40:8They said to him, "We have dreamed a dream, and there is no one who can interpret it."

Joseph said to them, "Don't interpretations belong to God? Please tell it to me."

40:9The chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, "In my dream, behold, a vine was in front of me, 40:10and in the vine were three branches. It was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and the clusters of it brought forth ripe grapes. 40:11Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand."

40:12Joseph said to him, "This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days. 40:13Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head, and restore you to your office. You will give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, the way you did when you were his butler. 40:14But remember me when it will be well with you, and show kindness, please, to me, and make mention of me to Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house. 40:15For indeed, I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews, and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon."

40:16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said to Joseph, "I also was in my dream, and, behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head. 40:17In the uppermost basket there was of all kinds of baked food for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head."

40:18Joseph answered, "This is the interpretation of it. The three baskets are three days. 40:19Within three more days, Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you, and will hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from off you." 40:20It happened the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants, and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and the head of the chief baker among his servants. 40:21He restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand; 40:22but he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them. 40:23Yet the chief butler didn't remember Joseph, but forgot him.

New Testament

Matthew 25

25:1"Then the Kingdom of Heaven will be like ten virgins, who took their lamps, and went out to meet the bridegroom. 25:2Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. 25:3Those who were foolish, when they took their lamps, took no oil with them, 25:4but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 25:5Now while the bridegroom delayed, they all slumbered and slept. 25:6But at midnight there was a cry, 'Behold! The bridegroom is coming! Come out to meet him!' 25:7Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 25:8The foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.' 25:9But the wise answered, saying, 'What if there isn't enough for us and you? You go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.' 25:10While they went away to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast, and the door was shut. 25:11Afterward the other virgins also came, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us.' 25:12But he answered, 'Most assuredly I tell you, I don't know you.' 25:13Watch therefore, for you don't know the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

25:14"For it is like a man, going into another country, who called his own servants, and entrusted his goods to them. 25:15To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one; to each according to his own ability. Then he went on his journey. 25:16Immediately he who received the five talents went and traded with them, and made another five talents. 25:17In like manner he also who got the two gained another two. 25:18But he who received the one went away and dug in the earth, and hid his lord's money.

25:19"Now after a long time the lord of those servants came, and reconciled accounts with them. 25:20He who received the five talents came and brought another five talents, saying, 'Lord, you delivered to me five talents. Behold, I have gained another five talents besides them.'

25:21"His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'

25:22"He also who got the two talents came and said, 'Lord, you delivered to me two talents. Behold, I have gained another two talents besides them.'

25:23"His lord said to him, 'Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.'

25:24"He also who had received the one talent came and said, 'Lord, I knew you that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you did not scatter. 25:25I was afraid, and went away and hid your talent in the earth. Behold, you have what is yours.'

25:26"But his lord answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant. You knew that I reap where I didn't sow, and gather where I didn't scatter. 25:27You ought therefore to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received back my own with interest. 25:28Take away therefore the talent from him, and give it to him who has the ten talents. 25:29For to everyone who has will be given, and he will have abundance, but from him who has not, even that which he has will be taken away. 25:30Throw out the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

25:31"But when the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 25:32Before him all the nations will be gathered, and he will separate them one from another, as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 25:33He will set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left. 25:34Then the King will tell those on his right hand, 'Come, blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 25:35for I was hungry, and you gave me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me drink; I was a stranger, and you took me in; 25:36naked, and you clothed me; I was sick, and you visited me; I was in prison, and you came to me.'

25:37"Then the righteous will answer him, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, and feed you; or thirsty, and give you a drink? 25:38When did we see you as a stranger, and take you in; or naked, and clothe you? 25:39When did we see you sick, or in prison, and come to you?'

25:40"The King will answer them, 'Most assuredly I tell you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.' 25:41Then he will say also to those on the left hand, 'Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire which is prepared for the devil and his angels; 25:42for I was hungry, and you didn't give me food to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave me no drink; 25:43I was a stranger, and you didn't take me in; naked, and you didn't clothe me; sick, and in prison, and you didn't visit me.'

25:44"Then they will also answer, saying, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and didn't help you?'

25:45"Then he will answer them, saying, 'Most assuredly I tell you, inasmuch as you didn't do it to one of the least of these, you didn't do it to me.' 25:46These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life."
